Task 1 - IT

 HORROR: IT

IT:

Director: Andy Muschietti

In this opening the weather is miserable and raining, it's also night which is a horror convention. Georgy is wearing a yellow rain coat and yellow wellies, this can represent Georgy as innocent and positive, compared to Pennywise who is in the dark and has red make up, this can represent danger and how he could be a danger towards Georgy.

The camera keeps cutting to the little yellow boat and Georgy. The camera is also placed at Pennywise's eyes locking up to Georgy and also placed at Georgy's eyes looking down upon Pennywise.

The music playing is a positive toned piece which is not normally associated with horror. As soon as Georgy hits his head the music dynamic changes and it builds suspension. When the boat goes down the drain, the camera angles and music lead towards there being a jump scare.

The film stars a young boy and an older man who portrays a clown. As the boy is vulnerable we automatically assume something bad will happen, there is also no one else around so if anything happens they people could potentially get away with it as theirs no witness.

The mise en scene of this film all follows the conventions of a horror films, the lighting is dark and it's set in a quiet town in the rain, the costume is bright so georgy stands out but we don't see Pennywise's full body in this clip, which leads to mystery, why don't we see Pennywise in full? The audience wants to know why and this little detail draws them in.

 What do we learn?

We learn that there is a clown in this film and a young boy, they have some sort of relationship, we assume that Georgy is going to be the victim in this film and Pennywise could be the threat.

Georgy is innocent and a good kid and is being friendly to Pennywise and by this we can tell his very vulnerable, and we feel bad for him because he's only a boy. We find out Georgy has a brother who is sick and he's very close with him.

Who are we introduced to?

We are introduced to a young boy called Georgy and a clown called Pennywise. We also see Georgy's friend briefly and we know they have walkie talkies to communicate.

What setting are used?

It's set on a town, its dark and raining, there's several drains and the boat goes down one.

What is the look/style/aesthetic?

The film looks dangerous at first but then becomes creepy, which is probably what the director wanted the film to look like, he wanted to scare the audience. We assume there will be a jump scare when Georgy looses his boat because of the change in tempo in the music and how there's a long pause, the camera focuses on Georgy looking into this dark hole. As soon as the bright eyes appears in the black, this changes the aesthetic from just a dangerous setting for a young boy to a creepy and scary senareo for an 11 year old boy and we as the audience are scared for him.

What conventions of the genre are there?

Conventions of horror films consist of bad weather and low key lighting which IT has. This makes the audience associate this film with horror and thriller.

Is it obvious what genre is is? Is it a hybrid?

Yes because the film follows some conventions such as dim lighting, bad weather and dark colour palettes. There could be a hybrid of either mystery or action, because the clip ends with Georgy's hand in the drain and anything could happen, this builds suspense for the audience to keep watching.

What sound is there?

There's non diegetic sound such as the music leading up to meeting with Pennywise, however, we also hear diegetic sounds such as Georgy's laughter and him splashing around in puddles.
