Task 1 - A Quiet Place

HORROR - A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place:

Director: John Krasinski

Watching the video above until 3 minutes. The film starts with a few clips of the derelict town, in about 0.30 minutes in there's movement of a young boy running. This Sets the scene for the rest of the film. The setting is very quiet and it starts with the characters in a shop, no body is around. The characters are using sign language to communicate. There's missing people posters up on a pin board, the director thought about every detail to the mise-en-scene.

The cinematography and editing is slow, there 8 still videos of the town that show the setting. They are about 4 second videos which are quite long compared to 2 second clips. The camera angle varies to give the best angle. Some are shots of the floor and some are of the sky/ceiling. This opening is contrasting with the climax of the film near the end where there's short, fast quick pace shots. There is a tracking shot moving past the aisle showing two of the younger characters. The clip cuts to the young girl and it's a lose up allowing us to focus o her hearing aid.

There's not much sound except ambient sounds such as wind and trees. The character facial expression and movement shows that they are trying to be quiet. We do not yet know why they are being so quiet but it makes us want to carry on watching to find out why.

The aesthetics of the film is abandoned and we are shown this by how quiet and lonely the place is. The film doesn't look like a horror film, it starts off more like a mystery. So far the film hasn't had anyone die that we know of and there's no weapons or gory scenes like 'Scream'.

What do we learn?

As the audience we learn that there will be sign language as there's a deaf girl. we also learn that there's missing people and the town is abandoned.

Who are we introduced to?

We are introduced to the ‘mum’ and the daughter and son, and we are also introduced to the ‘dad’ around 3.00 minutes.

What setting are used?

The setting used is an abandoned town that had derelict shops and missing person posters. The lighting is dark inside the shops because they cannot turn on lights because maybe there’s not any electricity.

What is the look/style/aesthetic?

The look is very rural and calm.

What conventions of the genre are there?

In a typical horror films theres’s jump scares and flashing shots. In the opening of this film there is no quick flashing shots and currently no jump scares. Another convention is dark colour pallets however this film starts with a bright sky and the only dark movements are in the shop when there’s no lights turned on but there’s sunlight coming in through the window.

Is it obvious what genre is is? Is it a hybrid?

This isn’t obvious what genre this is as the opening is challenging the conventions, so far it looks like a mystery, in my opinion.

What sound is there?

The sound in ambient and diegetic where the background noise such as wind can be heard by the actors.
